![]() The most critical element in an R&B production aside from a groovy beat is soul. And in this new album entitled Move by New York– based Filipino-American R&B artist Eric G, there is no shortage of soul. In fact, it is abundant. So abundant that upon hearing the tracks in this record, one can conclude right away that the soul that moves the music is divinely inspired.
Yes, Eric G is a Christian R&B artist. That very well explains it. This 11-track album is not an R&B record that injects vague and general Christian messages of love, peace and forgiveness. No sir. This is an upfront proclamation of the joys of having Christ in one’s life. From the title track ‘Move’ to the album closer ‘It’s Time’ there’s no mistaking what the artist’s convictions are and that is very impressive. There's even a direct refference to a Biblical verse and chapter. The track ‘My Everything’ has the appeal of a Gary Valenciano praise and worship number. It is delicate, sincere, well written and superbly produced by Eric G himself in his NY studio. Lyrically, Eric G. is not shy in proclaiming his faith in an ever-relativistic world. He is like a voice in the wilderness proclaiming the coming of the kingdom sans the loincloth and the dirt, but with well-tailored coolness and velvety vocals. It is true that most Christian albums tend to be preachy, well, isn’t that the point? Well it is, but there is a certain way that Christian music can be a double-edged weapon in its purpose to both preach and entertain. It can either hurt or inspire. And a good balance of both is the reason why some Christian records crossover even to hardcore atheists. But an imbalance could be a real turn-off too. Eric G’s Move album has tracks that simply evoke the high of being in love with Jesus. But it also has moments, though very few, when the message seems to hang heavy and perhaps make the listener feel like crying out of guilt. The tracks U Need God and It's Time comes to mind here. But yes, it is a Christian record and things like this should be hardly surprising at all. Top tracks in the album aside from My Everything are: Bandwagon, Riding With You, Get God, and Without You. The album is available on CDbaby as well as on iTunes. Move is highly recommended to music lovers who still believe that sung prayers reach the heavens faster than recited ones.
